Default 2000 Durango compass question

Guys, I know that this has been addressed multiples of times but just to keep my sanity before replacing it, with another that I have to buy...
Does the compass need the computer connections in order to work?
Or just hot from ignition and ground?
I installed one with the temp sensor straight up wired from the sensor to the overhead console, and the hot and ground to the compass, (NOT using the computer functions), it keeps showing "N cal", all the time no matter what I do.
Went around in circles til I got dizzy, (either direction), unplugged the battery over night etc...
The temp works fine.

if it is not wired up correctly i would assume that is the issue, wire it up correctly (according the wiring diagram) and see if it works correctly, if not then look into replacing it.

Your wiring jobber was incorrect. Follow the wiring diagrams.

Ok, thanks. I guess wiring it correctly, means getting the trucks computer in the mix as well???
