R/T- Interesting find without Towing Package?
"R/T" became marketing, no performance across all lines.
IndyD
Incorrect.
The Limited Slip was available on all Durangos not just the R/T.
The Alternator is a 136 amp which I which I'm sure was standard.
The gearing that you could get in the 9.25" Chrysler Corporate rear end was avalibe in 3.92 Limited Slip or Open. Also you could get the 3.55's but not in Limited Slip. The 8.25" Chrysler Corporate rear end only came in 3.55 (from what I understand) but the Service Manual states that it could come in a Limited Slip version, however I have not seen one or heard of somebody having it?
Yes, the R/T was standard for a Limited Slip 9.25" Chrysler Corporate as you stated. Also the Tow Package (was NOT standard) as you indicated and was an add on, also it came with a Heavy Duty cooling system and all relays including bake controller interface harness under the dash.

i have the 3.55's, and im pretty sure i have the limited slip, i'll get a pic of the rpo sheet when i can.
ok maybe not, does anti-spin count? i could swear i found limited slip somewhere on the car though...

Lift the rear axle by placing a floor jack under the differential in the center of the axle. Chock the front wheels and lift the both rear wheels off the ground. Now turn one of the rear tires by hand and watch the other. If it spins the same way it is limited slip, if it turns the opposite way then it is open gearing.
Thank you everyone for your help in learning about the R/T's and towing packages. I had always assumed the R/T's came with everything but that was incorrect of me. I've since taken another look at the hitch, and while it is a mopar hitch, I see that it is slightly different from the one that would have come from the factory, mainly in that I do not see a place where the tow hook would go (an accessory). So if I get the upgraded alternator and aux. transmission cooler, oh and bigger mirrors, then it would qualify as having the two package now.
Are we sure about the 01-03 R/T's not having any performance mods to them? I know that in my 01, it says premium fuel on the gas cap as well as the manual and on the original window sticker.

ok my 2 cents....
First Chrysler offers a 8.25 track lock diff on RTs.. i have one. They m ay be rare but ive seen a couple here in Mexico.
As far as i thought all R/Ts 2000-2003 come with the tranny cooler so it seems to be odd on yours.
About the Engine tune its only a more agressive timing adjustment.. it claims to have 10hp gains just by using premium fuel. but i thought premium for all RTs was a must i may be mistaken..
never tried lower than premium octane fuel.. i guess ill try it today, my tank's empty

the tranny cooler was part of the towing package, not the R/T package so NO all R/Ts did not come with them, granted alot did bc many people bought the R/Ts as tow vehicles (hence, tow package)
the R/Ts which came with the more aggressive tune required premium (high test, w/e you want to call it) fuel, if yours needs it, the window sticker, owners manual, AND gas cap will say "xx Octane minimum" (or something to that effect)

From what I hear on this forum, there are conflicting results from many R/T owners concerning the "required" use of premium fuel. Some R/T owners did not have that requirement and some do. I think this conflict may be due to the geographical area that has very high altitudes where the R/T is sold. Maybe some geograhical areas, use of 91 or higher octane is not easy to come by such as Denver. I think their regular octane starts around 85 and their premium is 89 octane.
Other than the geograpical deduction, it may be possible the dealer may have added a performance PCM controller for their 01-03 R/T's to give the sales people something to say to their potential buyers.
At least I know my 2000 R/T had the sticker "Premium fuel required" at the fuel cap and also states so (91 or higher Octane) in my owners manual.
When I made the trip to Denver, I used my hypertech programmer to retune my PCM from premium fuel to regular fuel. While in Denver, I bought midgrade fuel if avail which the oct rating is 87.
As soon as I came back to DFW, I retuned it again back to Premium fuel settings.
I would say, if your R/T did not have the premium fuel required, your pcm may be a regular PCM. Get a programmer to tune it to 91/93, you will notice a better sharper response from your 5.9.

About the Towing package..it does have the tranny cooler but no trailer hitch nor oversized side mirrors. strange...
Now the fuel issue... it does have the premium only sticker.
After yesterda's post I started to test regular fuel here in mexico city. A very low quality 87 octane. its not pinging but i notice a huge difference. the Throttle is non responsive and tranny hesitates at the shifting points (never happened before).
After reading some articles about octane requirements my conclusions are:
1st This 2001 RT D requieres hi octane fuel (91)
2nd I am able to use regular 87 octane fuel cause:
a)cilinder low carbon deposits
b)Low temperature engine operation (new radiator and efan)
c)no added weight on the D (only me inside XD)
Using the programmer is a good idea i may buy one of those.
