Default Just bought a 99, 5.9 Durango

So I bought a 99 5.9 durango with 3rd row seating yesterday. I test drove this thing twice and had it checked out by a mechanic. I am very happy with it but it has a slight problem (I think) I did fill up on gas across the street from the dealer when I drove away with it and the gas station is known for poor gas its Caseys... I should have went to another station.. So I noticed it was missing alittle at idle like bad gas, and sometimes on acceleration it does the missing thing. I think its just bad gas but is there anything I can check?

could check spark plugs/wire (CHAMPION COPPER CORE PLUGS ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gapped to .040) new cap/rotor w/ brass contacts, check the air filter, and get some good gas in the truck (could try a fuel injector cleaner if you want to)

Thanks for the reply. I plan on changing oil, air filter, plugs, and see what happens if I still have the problem I will do cap/coil. I will update when this is done if the problem is still there.

John,

You can use autolites, NGK plugs too if you wish, but the platinum plugs are the ones to stay away from. You don't need to get a coil, if it's working, it's working. Get some good named brand gas in there and change the said ignition parts and let us know how it turns out. There's a chance the rig may need a TPS.
Good Luck.

Sorry for the late update but Ive been busy. So I have gone through a few tanks of gas from various stations and sometimes the rig runs fine, other times it misses or sputters still. you can feel it at idle, and sometimes really does it around 50mph... It doesnt do it all the time, but often enough to know its not the gas thats the issue.

ideas?

did you put champion copper core plugs in it? and replace the other components as per my previous post?

is there a relationship btwn how much gas you put in the tank an when it runs rough? i had a truck that would run really badly for 1-2 tanks of gas if you let it get under 1/4 full i figure there was alot of crap on the bottom of the tank and when it got too low it gunked up the filter temporarily. something to think about

Havent changed plugs yet, oil change done. Doesnt seem to matter about how full the tank is.. right now its doing it and I just filled the tank. I also looked to see if a plug wire was touching the motor but they seem fine. I plan on getting some plugs for it soon.

how much gas was left in the tank when you got to the gas station, this is the amount that matters, (in my story from above)

also make sure you change the plugs/wire/cap/rotor with quality parts, and DO IT NOW, that is the FIRST STEP to solving any rough running/misfire problems

Update after checking the plug wires, I decided to check again. Sometimes I miss stuff I noticed the coil wire was stuck to the side of the motor. I pulled it off, will pick up a new wire and tie it away better from the engine. It was melted some and could be the issue. I will update if the issue goes away after new wire on.

Ok I put new plugs in it and cleared the codes... ran fine for a few miles then started up again. I am going to check the plug wires tonight to see if any of them are arc'n

After that I will probally replace the cap and rotor.
