I turned on the A/C today and heard a "hissing" sound coming from the cargo area. I removed the interior panels to try to isolate the problem and save on labor cost. The sound is definitely coming from near the rear blower.

What would be the most obvious culprit? I always work on my own vehicles but this is out of my range. I'm more powertrain myself! I just want to be armed with as much info as I can before I take it somewhere. Knowledge is power!

If the sound is coming from the rear and sounds like a hissing sound, might be an expansion valve leaking at the gasket or evaporator. You will have to tear into the rear HVAC box to pin point it. Do not ask me to help in taking apart the rear cause it is a PITA to do and I am the wrong person for that advice.

Thanks Pete, at least I'll go into the service garage tomorrow with an idea of what the problem is. While everyone states your the man for HVAC and your above statement, I'll forego digging any deeper and let the garage deal with it.

cheers,

Default 2002 durango ac performance issues

I read a thread that you put out a while back on an AC issue with your 2002 Durango. My story is almost identical. I bought the truck brand new in 02 and have never had any problem with the air at all. Always performed well. Very reliable. Just took a short trip in 100 degree weather while pulling a 21 ft boat and the system worked flawlessly. Got home and was driving locally and the AC suddenly started acting up. I put gauge set on the low and high side and discovered that occasionally the system is kicking out on the high side. My gauge set has long hoses so I was able to leave connected and drive down the road at highway speeds and monitor pressures. The pressures on the high side would occasionally go all the way up to over 400 to 450 and was kicking out on high head. The suction would go all the way down to 18 psig. Majority of the time the pressures were around 300 psig on high and 30 psig on suction. Ambient temperatures is a true 100+ F. The air that the center vents delivers is about 50-55 F on recirc. When I let the system set and idle with a fan blowing across condensor the pressures are 30-35 and high side 225 to 250. Any thoughts? possible restriction? What did you discover with your truck? Expansion valve ? Condensor?

The posts were from 2010. I would not be certain that you will get an answer to such an old thread.
