i am getting ready to do the same thing to mine, but my transfer case has a "whine" to it...and my thoughts were to drain the fluid and replace with something or an additive that will quiet it down some to get me by and not have to rebuild a transfer case at this time....any thoughts? my chrysler dealer local here said i could put a quart of lucas oil rear end additive in it, and top it off with atf+4 trans fluid....your guys thoughts?

dont use additives except for friction modifier in limited slip rear differentials, it causes more harm than good and the best thing you can do it fix it right,

my next question is are you 100% positive that it is coming from the t-case??? and what did you do to confirm this?? hearing it from inside the cab is NOT an acceptable answer as sound carries in weird ways to your ear inside

I would just replace the ATF+4 fluid (for the little amount there is inside) and be done with it. If it's going to break, then it will break either way.

Yeah just replace with ATF+4 or dexron III but as ATF+4 is much better go with that , save your money on the lucas , it is pure snake oil and has nothing too it but a Group I basestock oil and no additives, it would actually hurt more than anything . ATF+4 is the way to go

replaced with ATF-4 and no difference...there were no metal shavings or anything when i drained the case last night...when my chrysler dealer transmission tech drove it for a seperate issue earlier this week he said the same thing that it sounds like the transfer case is going out....i have been around cars/classics, my hole life and think of myself as somewhat knowledgeable of vehicles, etc....ive rebuilt rear ends, engines, restored old cars etc...now in saying that i have never owned a durango, and if there is something else i need to look at or check please tell me...i dont want to put a 400-800 case in this thing if its not going to fix it. its coming from the floor shifter area, and its sound pitch changes with speed, even at 55 mph or so if i kick it into neutral and let it coast the sound go's away....its quiet as a mouse so i know its not a tire noise or bearing, etc...

any thoughts as to what else to check? or how do i know for sure i need a rebuild case?

keep in mind when you put the truck in nuetral this is the transmission, not the t-case, the t-case is still turning with the rest of the drivetrain, this would make me think that the t-case is fine

I had the "noise issue" with my Dakota, and Dodge replaced the entire front differential assembly. Drivetrain noise will telegraph in a 4WD vehicle, and it is often difficult to pinpoint the exact source by simply listening.

My 1998 would wine if I stomped on it. They are a chain drivin drive and so they do in a way. I would just drive it and see what happens, if the case goes out you'll know it.

As for Dexron III and ATF+4, they are totally different and not the same. ATF+4 is superior and what you are supposed to use, so only use ATF+4.
