Default Urgent! Girlfriend can't come see me! 03 Durango drinking coolant at slow rate

Hey guys, new member need help with GF's Durango! She aint been able to spend the night! Seems like years. Have to get her mobile again....lol

I'm searching the archives now, but if someone knows any good threads pertaining to replacing heads, head gaskets at home, or coolant problems associated with the 4.7, I need to get up to speed on any problems I might run into. Specialty tools, recommendations etc...etc.... She takes good care of her rig, but it does have 170k miles on it. Otherwise it's in mint condition.

These are the symptoms so far.

1) Hydrocarbons measured in overflow. We decided not to drive it anymore after getting the bad news.

2) Rad will not pull from overflow.

3) Rad needs to be topped every two months otherwise temp gauge starts rising rapidly when idling. She's totally on top of it, and has never let the temp gauge get much past half. Never seen 3/4! She's not a ditz, just looks like one

4) No CEL, no codes thrown yet.

I'm planning on getting a pair of rebuilt heads from a local large scale cylinder head rebuilder familiar with late model stuff. As I understand most likely the head is either warped or cracked beyond repair or close to. I also need to learn the proper way to bleed the cooling system. Anyone want to chime in feel free!!!

Thanks guys, I'll start searching!

John

Hey thanks Guys I'll keep you updated. Basically it has a blown head gasket so we are going to have a shop do it. I bought a pair of rebuilt heads for 550 out right no core.

Anyone know if we can run the 180 stat in the peoples republic of mexifornia and still pass smog?

Yes you will pass emissions, however if it is a 4.7L motor you should put a OEM T-stat in as that is what that motor likes to run and less problems.
