Default Adding Tow Hitch

I have a 4.7L 2002 4x4 Durango SLT with ~100K on it. It does not have a tow package. I would like to have one added, probably just by going down to Uhaul to have them add a Class 3 hitch.

I know Durangos have had some issues with towing so please let me know what else I need to think about with this.

I plan to use the hitch mostly just to put my bike rack on but also occasionally to pull my 3000 lb boat an hour or two to the lake (I'll usually use my sequoia with an "official" tow package to do this.) I don't anticipate doing a lot of towing however.

What else do I need to consider?

Do I have to have the transmission fluid cooler added? Do I need to get the official dodge wiring harness put on or will Uhaul just do something that'll work fine? Do I need to always tow with overdrive off? Anything else?

Thanks in advance.

i believe the factory hitch is class IV, but for what you are looking to do the III should work fine

where did you hear this? id like to slap that person if the face for speaking without knowing what they are talking about, these trucks tow great for their size, not being a full-size they obviously wont pull as much, but for their size the tow very well (7200lb capacity on the r/ts iirc)

if you dont plan on doing much towing the hitch itself should suffice

depends on how much towing you actually do, its never a bad thing to have, but really shouldnt be necessary IMO for the occasional amount of towing you plan to do.

and yes i would keep OD off when towing, it will give you more power and save the trans
