My dad suggested that but we want to be careful not to fry the fan because then we would be screwed. How important is the electric fan? Is it necessary? If I don't fix it will it put wear on my engine?

I know Mean Green said that the Electric Fan should come on when the A/C is running. Can anyone else confirm this? BTW Green, I checked the Engine Coolant Level and it was low so I added some.

yes the e-fan will come on when the A/C is on, or when the engine temp gets above 210*F

the electric fan is not necessary (look at the 98/99/00 trucks, they dont have it) but it definitely DOES HELP, i would keep it working, you could try swapping the e-fan relay in the PDC (black box under the hood) there are alot of duplicate relays in there so just swap to one for diagnosis purposes.

Just to add my 2 cents. The E-fan does come on randomly if you sit and idle for a long period of time. I noticed this on my D when I was monitoring my tranny fluid and other things and the engine idled for a good 15-20 minutes. I just heard the Efan kicked in for a few minutes and then turn itself off. It will repeat the process again later on.

Also, when your temp goes beyond 210 degrees, the PCM will put your engine in limp mode in order to prevent it from working harder to possibly preserve the life of the engine. So at 210+ degrees, your D may spit and sputter along until it cools down below 210.

Why thank you as my head inflates!.......

Only 1998-1999 have no electronic fan. 2000 was the upgrade to the new style if I recall correctly.

In the trucks equipped with he electric fan it will come on whenever the A/C is engaged or when the truck reaches 210 F.

If you fan is not coming on:
Check fan with A/C on to see if it engages.
2nd, swap the relays in the PDC and check again.
3rd, jump the leads one hot and one ground, if it comes on, then if nothing replace the fan.

hydra gets a cookie. Mine is a 2000 and does have an e-fan. there must be no one else with V10 problems for you to be giving us pathetic V8 types advice. He just can't let go. btw, I checked the E-Fan Engagement on A/C and it does not engage.

Yea!

There is only 2 members with V10's now that I know of but I have been the 1st Generation Durango Moderator for 5 years before passing the reigns and retiring so I know my way around them very well.

Try this:

Status Update..... I switched the two 30 amp fuses and discovered that if i Use the electric fan fuse for the auto shut down fuse, the car will not turn over. but when i switch back, it works just fine.... so... i am going to go get a 30 amp fuse tomorrow and hope its an easy fix.
