Default 99 Durango mystery down gearing, help needed!

I need some serious help guys,
here is the deal

I have a 99 Durango 5.9L 4x4 SLT
I did a tranny service then shortly after, the tranny started acting weird, while driving it will suddenly down gear, 1 sometimes 2 or even 3 gears, sometimes hitting the rev limiter, If I let off the throttle it comes down,
after driving for a short time it actually stops acting up and drives normal again, when the engine is cold it never acts up, its only after everything has come up to temperature, and it never seems to act up under moderate accelartion only once you are at a steady speed or very slowly accelating

so here is what I did,
I replaced the TPS and the speed sensor on the tranny, then changed the fluid to ATF+4 since the parts shop told me the generic fluid would work just fine when I did the service

I'm at a loss, no codes have come up since the TPS code, and I changed that,

please help, I have no idea what to do next

thanks

they lied to you how long did you run with the wrong fluid in? did you do a complete purge when you changed back to ATF +4?? if not you probably have done some damage to the transmission.

however you could check the TV cable just to be sure it is the only other thing i can think of that would case this besides internal problems (if the trans shop used the wrong fluid i would go back and demand that they fix it since they put the wrong fluid in it, but idk how far you will actually get with that)

I just posted this on another thread, but it sounds like you have a similar problem. Hope this helps:

I have a '99 Durango 4x4 5.9L and had the exact same problem as you. It started with mine as not shifting into higher gears, then eventually deteriorated into the engine dying while driving. I took to mechanic and they pulled the codes and replaced a few sensors but that did not fix it. Then I looked on here and someone said it was the PCM. I bought a refurbished one on eBay for $200. It was the easiest thing ever. You just send them the milage, VIN, and PCM model number and they program it and you just plug it in. Takes about 5 minutes to take the old one out and replace. Now it runs like a dream. Hope this helps.

never jump to a pcm as the problem, it is the LEAST LIKELY part to be causing the issue when talking about the transmission (especially on the earlier models where it ONLY controlled od) and is more expensive than just about anything shy of a rebuild, is it possible YES, is it likely, NO

what kind of internal damage are you thinking? solenoid damage?? and what the heck is the TV cable? I ran the fluid for a couple of weeks

chrisb70

it doesnt' sound like our problems are the same, my tranny always shifts up, and it never dies, it idles perfect, so I highly doubt the pcm is the problem,
especially if its not throwing a code

come on guys, I was hoping to find someone that knew the problem not a bunch of guess work

master tech is the transmission expert around these parts,

the tv cable is the cable that tells the transmission what the throttle position is, it will cause the truck to shift under the correct amount of gas pedal pressure.

and looking for an answer if fine, but just expecting us to have encountered your EXACT problem is unrealistic, over the internet it is VERY difficult to diagnose some issues since all we have to go by is the description given by the user, it COULD be missing some information, or include unrelated information which throws us off. we are aware of alot of issues that come up on these trucks but we cant possibly know everything, be patient and the answer will work itself out for you.

I think the guy who did your tranny originally messed up. First he sold you an inferior brand of fluid and let you drive out of there. Sounds like the tranny fluid is breaking down too fast and the tranny is going into limp mode to save itself. Did the mech adjust your bands? Could be he messed up on them. Take it to a TRUSTED transmission shop and have them look at the bands but tell them exactly what's been happening to your tranny. You need to have a DRBII(?) reader hooked up to your D to find out any tranny codes. Hopefully there hasn't been any major damage. HTH.
