180 thermostat
What 180 degree thermostat are you guys using for the 4.7l engine? i'm only finding ones for the 5.2l and the 5.9l.. as long as the diamters and size specs are the same i should be good to go ja?
dont do it, the 4.7 was designed to run at the higher temperature, and you need to find a stat w/ a weep hole in it in order for it to work correctly, (btw, those are kinda hard to find) and the jet stat does NOT have this weep hole as per the picture
I haven't run across a need for a lower thermostat on the 4.7. Even when I had my Ram 5.2, plenty went with a 180 for pinging issues. In my opinion its a band aid to cover up the true cause. I'm a firm believer in sticking with what temp the engineers had in mind for the engine to work with.
Well then using that opinion the 360 block should always stay a 180 degree T-stat, but then again they changed it to a 195 for emissions only and they have a tendency to crack the heads with that higher temp because the motor and heads were never built to run that temp. So with that being said, you would still agree that using the same casts as back in 1962 and 2000 but use the 195 degree T-stat because that is what OEM wanted to use (because of emissions regulations) would be the best viable option?
I would say the opposite. If it was originally made to run a 180, and the use of 195 is to high and causes cracked heads (about 95%) and I have seen that for myself, well I'm going back old school to the 180.
In the 4.7L, it was more built to run the 195 verses the old style 360 blocks that wasn't, not to mention lots of documented issues with using lower 180 degreee T-stats. For the 4.7L I would stay with the 195 for those reasons.
ah ok thanks. i'm just thinking of replacing my thermostat. My car runs fine nice and cool but when i start going up hills like on the free way etc. the engine temp climbs pretty high up there. it never get to the over heat mark but its up there. the stock thermostat has 95k on it so im hopeing that thats the problem with my up hill heat. maybe it snot opening all the way or something.
