tps question

I have a 2000 durango w/4.7 and need to replace the tps. I replaced one a few years back and recall instructions about having to turn the key to the on position for a time and so on but can't remember the details on the proper set-up for the TPS. The instructions with the new one only has the jeeps info with no mention of the durango . I double checked and I have the right sensor for the 00 durango. Do I still need to go through the old steps? If so what are they. Thanks

iv never heard of those 'old steps' you are referring to, just unhook the battery negative cable and change the sensor, put the cable back on and your done, give it up to 500 miles for the computer relearn the new part, and your all done.

Do you mean turn the key on and off for three times to get the P code or turn the key on with the battery disconnected to drain it so you can reset the pcm? Most likely you mean turn the key on to drain the battery. Like shrps said, disconnect the negative and change out the tps then reconnect. You can drain the residual power by steeping on the brake as well.

Thanks, I'll follow the advice. It's basicly what's in the jeep instructions.
The old setup was easy but included a short period of time, maybe a minute or so with the key at the on position without starting the vehicle after installing the new sensor then turning it back to the off position for a while before starting. Just can't recall the exact times. The whole replacement took about ten minutes and I saved the old sensor box but not the instructions. Figures.
Anyway, thanks again for the help...

He is talking about reseting the PCM after replacing the TPS (or other parts).
Once you do this the PCM will re-learn the settings.
To reset your engine codes:
Remove the negative terminal of your battery (10mm wrench).
Turn your ignition key to START and hold it there for about 15 seconds.
Turn your ignition key to OFF and remove it.
Connect the negative terminal of your battery.
Start but do not hit the throttle. Idle for about 10/15 seconds then turn off.
Restart the truck and drive as usual. It will take at least 12 starts and 48 miles to fully retune the computer. Hard Codes leave a shaddow for 40 full cold starts.
