Default Durango Running and Starting issues

I am trying to help fix my buddies 1998 Durango. It has the 318(5.2L) in it. The jeep has about 180 k on it. The start the jeep you basically have to floor it while turning the key, it will crank for second then it starts. Once started you need to keep your foot on the gas to keep it running. If you let off the gas it dies instantly and you can here a loud hiss like it is sucking in air some where.

He took it to a mechanic the mechanic would cost him $1,200 because he would need to replace the intake gasket and timing chain cover gasket.

If any one else has an Idea on what could be wrong I would appreciate the Input.

Have your battery checked as well.
If you have a weak battery, you have to keep the RPM's up to keep it running with durangos.
No idea on the hiss though... A/C system equalizing maybe?

The Battery is on the way out. It needs to be replaced. We put a new battery in for testing.

Thanks for the replies.

I will start with an new battery and Check The IAC Motor.

I am not describing the hiss well either. It more like sucking air through a straw sound.

Look on the back of the air hat and ensure the crank case breather is hooked up. It is hiden back there......lol

Also if you think there is a Intake leak or vacuum leak spray a litte carb cleaner toward the hiss sound and if the idle increases or decreases then there is your leak and you just gotta look harder.

Report back with your findings!
