'99 Durango 5.9L: Low Compression in Cyl. 1
Did compression check: 160 - 165 on every other cylinder but 120 on cyl #1. I was told these Durangos are famous for valve guides going out.
My motor has 138k miles; I'm in the process of rebuilding the tranny too.
I read past threads on this, but saw nothing exactly like this. I'd be grateful for any ideas.

120 is not good, but it's not bad either.
As for valve guides going out, well someone clearly doesn't know what they are talking about.
If you are in the middle or rebuilding the trans then clearly this is the time to rebuild the motor!
Here is a trick to see where the issue may lie:
First do a compression test. You can rent one from places like Auto Zone or other or even Harbor Freight has one for like $12. Write down the test psi numbers in order of cylinders.
If you find a low cylinder pour a couple of cap fulls of clean oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole then redo the compression test on that cylinder. If it gets more psi then it's piston rings and you need a rebuild on the entire engine or at least the rings on that cylinder. If the numbers are the same or close then it's a head gasket, or valve.
