Differential Noise
Hello Dodge Forum!
This is my first post and let me say first a big thank you for all the info in this forum.
Looking for a little advice on my "new" 1999 D. I just purchased it about a month ago and I am the 2nd owner. The previous owner verbally stated the transmission and rear diff have been replaced. The is a slight grinding noise. When I first test drove the truck I noticed it, and figured it was an easy wheel bearing replacement. Wheel bearings checked out OK so I thought it was the diff bearings. I only hear the noise when the driveshaft is turning so I figured it must be the pinion bearing. There is no play in the driveshaft and for the most part it feels smooth. Then when I open the diff for a fluid change and check I notice 3 pieces of metal at the bottom of the case. Looks like pieces of the clutch pack and retainer clips, verified in the photo. The question I have for you guys is judging by the contact pattern in the ring gear, could the noise I'm hearing be due to an overly tight backlash adjustment? The truck has 102k miles, and I'm assuming the diff was service sometime in the last 50k miles. (Previous owner didn't have the maintenance records). Any advice is appreciated. I've gone over the DIY Diff rebuild thread several times and am "gearing up" to do my first diff rebuild. I know I definitely need to replace the clutch packs and am trying to figure if any other parts need to be replaced.
