03 overheating issues

Default 03 overheating issues

Every time I use the ac the vehicle overheats. I have no idea where to even start. The ac blows the way it usually does, it just makes the car overheat. When the air is not running it runs fine. I went to the parts store and they told me I needed a clutch fan, but doesn't that run the actual radiator fan and not the auxillary?

check the clutch fan yourself, try spinning it by hand w/ the engine off, if it spins more than 1/2 a turn replace it, also check to make sure the electric fan on the radiator (look into the fan shroud from the engine bay) is running w/ the A/C on (i sounds to me like the electric fan is bad, but check both of them to be sure)

Is it getting hot static, on the highway, or both?

Simple stuff first; Make sure there's not a bunch of leaves and crap jammed between the condenser and radiator, or mud in the fins of either.

Verify that the electric is coming on with the A/C.

Remember, running the A/C both increases load on the engine, and increases the temperature of the air getting to the radiator, as the condenser has already heated.

Relatively easy to check the aux fan is working properly. Like both have said, make sure the efan comes on with the a/c. If it's not running, you can change out any relay in the PDC which is located under the hood between the battery and master cylinder. Pop off the cover and follow the printed schematics to find the relay for the aux fan. switch out with any other relay there to test the relay. If the relay switch out doesn't help, then you may want to run a hot and common lead directly from the battery to the efan connection. This connection should be located under and behind the front bumper. Lay on your back and slide under the front bumper. The connection should be green in color and can be disconnected w/o and tools. Connect hot to hot and common to common. Touch the other end of the wires to the battery and see if the fan comes on. If not, you will have to change the efan or mod up your cooling system by installing an aftermarket more powerful efan and getting rid of your clutch fan.
