Durango Stalling
Hello, new poster here. Glad I found this forum.
I have a 99 Durango and it has started stalling on me. seems like when I drive it at a constant speed/rpm it tries to stall. Give it a bit of gas and it keeps running. If I don't catch it fast enough it will stall. When it does stall, it takes awhile to get it to start agian, turns over but doesn't seem to fire. I've searched this forum and one other and keep finding references to a bad battery causing this. I don't claim to be a genious but that just doesn't make alot of sense to me. I had always understood that once the engine was running the battery could be disconnectd and the engine will run off of the alternator. I could understand a shorted cell causing this however. This make sense to anyone or does anyone have any other ideas?

Still happening but I noticed something else today. When it refuses to start the batt, fuel, oil pressure, and temp gauges are dead. All of the indicator lights come on however. I took it and had a scanner put on it this morning but came up clean. Any ideas?

On my 2000 when the battery was going I had the same issue. At one point it would not start again. My advice would be to have the battery tested because if it is going bad it is working your alternator to a certain death trying to charge a dead cell.
Your thought process is correct in regards to a vehicle running after it is started without the battery, but not on the newer vehicles. All this new computer junk and sensors all require 12 volts and the alternator is working its butt off trying to get a charge into a junk battery, not working the rest of the system.
I could be wrong on this, but it sure sounds like the problem I had. Good Luck.

Have you found the cause for your problem? I have a 1999 Durango and it is also stalling on me. It does it more when I stop at a stop light. At first it would start back fine just like nothing had happened. I was in a drive thru last night and it stalled and would not start back. I pushed it into a parking space and left it over night. It started back fine this morning. The battery and alternator checked out fine and the fuel pump seems to be working okay. Please let me know what your problem was so that I can have mine checked.
Just a thought, have you checked your throttle body to make sure it is not dirty and possibly change out the Throttle position sensor? My rough idling and cruise control speed surge issues were resolved when I cleaned up the throttle body and changed out the TPS.
I ran some B12 carb cleaner to clean up my throttle body and smooth out my idling issues. The TPS mainly fixed my engine RPM surge when using the cruise control as well as idling issues throughout the RPM band.

Better yet have you checked your alternator to see if it's actually charging the battery? Seems to me a bad alternator would sure monkey things up too and maybe give out some of the false sypmtoms you're noticing.
After a bit of detective work on my part, I decided that it was the ECM. I found online that it is covered by warranty for 80,000 miles or 8yrs. The Durango had 79, 882 miles when I dropped it off at the dealership. I left them a note describing everything. Runs fine for the most part, occassionally would stutter on the interstate, drive fine for about 40 miles then cutoff. Gauges die, will turn over but no fire, digital speedo eventually says "no bus". After a period of cooling it starts back up. They changed the ECM without too much prodding and no problems since...
