Just bought another 98...a few issues
But this one has been around the block a few times. Has 242,000 miles on it but runs like a champ.
SLT

4x4
I Had one of these a few years back and it was great vehicle but only had about a 1/4 of the miles. I made an offer on this one that was in need of a wheel bearing before I could even move it. I put a wheel bearing in it (in the guys driveway) and drove our new winter ride home...
The appearance is decent, alot of tree limb scratches, missing a inner drivers door latch handle and a glove box latch ****. Also missing the sunglass holder from the overhead.
Drove pretty good coming home, some minor play in the steering, a ratcheting sound in the steering column and the trans shift from 1st to 2nd seems a little "off ". Seems that there is a very slight slip and then catch...but not horrible.
If anyone has any of the minor pieces I am missing, Id be interested in a price.
Also, if anyone would have a moment to offer up some advice about the trans shift...I'd love to hear it. I am mechanically inclined and not afraid to tackle any task, just hate to chase my tail. Oh and that damn ratchet sound...WTH is it?
I know that there are many problems with the higher mileage Dodge trannys and have used the search function to find ALOT....almost too may to read. So here it is, another Tranny help question.

Get the transmission serviced. Drop the pan, replace the fluids and filter. Adjust the bands and pray you don't need a replacement soon. Suggest service on the diffs at the same time since it is a 98. DO NOT Flush.
Steering is likely bad too. 98/99s have that issue with the old rack. Replace.
Junk yard for your misc little interior parts.
All in all, $1000 if you are lucky to service trans and diff, replace rack and get misc parts. $1500 tops. If the trans is going/gone, ratchet that up to $3500 and likely costs more than the vehicle is worth at that point.

Thanks for the reply...
This will be nothing more than a winter vehicle so Im not really sweating the small stuff (interior) but would be nice to find. I'll do the fluids and filters and if I can find the specs, Ill adjust the bands. Guess I may have to buy yet another book.

If it is a 1998-1999 it should have the steering box. 2000-2003 have rack and pinion. The worm gear wasn't built very good in the box so it wares. You might need a replacement and if you do get a new pump as well. Try and get one that takes red fluid not brown, the red is ATF+4, and brown is a special fluid ONLY avalible at the dealer for $8 a quart.
