Default starting problem

Hi
my 98 d with 5.9 4x4 is having an intermittant starting problem
occasionally it wont start you can crank it and hold the gas pedal down and it will start then as soon as you let off the gass it stops.
but if it remove the negative battery cable for a minute and reconnect it it fires up fine
no codes come up and no check engine light
any ideas thanks

bad battery or bad IAC motor, if you hold the gas in long enough will it stay running? (this is pretty typical of the IAC motor)
