Help getting into 4wd
I have a 99 5.2 Durango SLT+. I have never had a 4wd vehicle and do not have the owners manual.
Anyways the 4x4 light doesnt come on when I start the SUV, but I have seen it before when I had a brake problem that I fixed, is this normal?
Also how do I go about getting it into 4WD? The visor says to never drive it on dry pavement in 4wd, but it is snowing and lots of ice so I wanted to test it out. I just have no idea how to do it? How to get out of it? and how to tell if its working in case the light is not working, but I am pretty sure I have seen it on before. Thank You

I have a 99 SLT 5.2 4x4 also.
My manual says.
2H to 4H or 4H to 2H
With the vehicle in motion, the transfer case will engage/disengage faster if you momemtarily release the accelerator pedal after making the shift. Apply a constant force when shifting the transfer case lever.
I just moved the lever from 2H to 4H with rolling in a parking lot at a slow speed.
Just pull the lever toward U into the 4H position.
My transfer case is the NV 231
2H
4H
N
4L
This is the pattern on mine

Service Manual: 1999 Durango FSM in the Durango Service Manual Folder. Look on www.ebay.com for an Owners Manual or try a junk yard.
The 4X4 light does not come on when you start the truck. It is on a different system.

I stopped at a stop sign and spun out the back end. Then I came back around to the stop sign while rolling towards it pulled it back into 4H, this time you could feel all 4 wheels dig in and I didnt spin the back end. Anways I think its working, but I still dont get a 4x4 light while in 4H, is this normal? The previous owner disconnected the check engine light I wonder if he disconnectd the 4x4 to?
