Hey guys thought I'd ask this now since I'm curious. i got a 2002 4.7l just like shrp's and i was wondering how much does the factory hitch pull? and whats the drop weight on it too?

i was just curious. I pulled a lil Volkswagen vr6 awhile ago and i hooked the strap to my hitch and was just curious now is that the best place to hook a tow strap to? and how capable is the factory hitch? i pulled the vr6 no sweat but still. just curious

i believe it is a class IV hitch, which in this case would mean the limiting factor is the truck itself, i dont have my manual on me, but i believe the 4.7 w/ 3.55 is rated for 6k lbs, with a max tongue weight of the trailer being around 700lbs, i could be mistaken on these numbers since i am going form memory here

does the tongue weight mean the amount of weight pushing down on it? I dont plan on towing anything i was just curious about this. but if it is what you say than thats not bad at all.

I thought that a stock 4.7 durango with 3.55's can tow around 4250 lbs and has a drop weight(tongue weight?) of 300 lbs. but i like your numbers better shrp!

here's some info i got off edmunds.com on the 4.7l durango:

im pretty sure those numbers are inflated a little bit, i know for a fact that 7200 is the max for any 4x4 (that is with the 5.9 and the 3.92 rear end gears), please dont hold me to those numbers, i dont have the manual here to reference

Those numbers are WAY inflated!

Towing:

5.9L - 2wd - 3.92 gearing -- #7500
5.9L --4X4 - 3.92 gearing -- #7300

The rest of the motors dwindles down to 5000 lbs.

So Hydra your saying my 4.7l 4x4 with the 3.55's will be able to tow roughly 5,000 pounds? the bumper/hitch that is will be sturdy enough for that? or are those numbers more aimed because of the gears and engine not the build of the durango itself?

Those large numbers there are both the trailer weight and the weight the durango itself is able to hold. you know like 7 passengers and some cargo inside and the trailer behind it. or else yeah 12,000 pounds is not right.

Other than that thanks guys for the info. its good to know what the D is capable of regardless of how I'll use it. Gotta love em.

The large numbers are the total GVTW (Gross Vehicle and Trailer Weight). This is basically the total weight the engine is carrying, including fuel, passengers, anything inside cab, trailer and cargo on trailer.

As for the hitch, it can withstand 7,500# and 750# tongue weight, for the Class IV hitch.

Also, keep in mind it's generally recommended to use trailer brakes and trailer braking system about 2,500#.

Yes, the 4.7L, 4X4, and 3.55 gearing is 5000 lbs towable.......I believe.

The truck it's self is designed to handel towing the 7,300 lbs on the 4X4 frame and 7,500 lbs for the 2wd frame, however the motors and gearing are different and therefore lower the towable weights. I think the braking systems are the same across the board. But legally you have to stay under the rated GVWR on the tag of your truck, ethiclly you need to only tow what your engine and drive train is rated to tow.

Thanks for that explanation Hydra, Thats kind of exactly what i wanted to know. I know my durango is built with the capability of 7300 pounds but the gears and engine limit me to roughly 5,000 pounds. good to know.

as far as towing someone off the snow bank or even out of a small ditch. where is the best place to attach the hook of a tow strap to on the durango? i used the small loops on the end of the hitch but i don't like hooking it there. I feel like i shouldn't hook it there?
