Wasn't a rotten egg smell indicative of a bad cat? Or am I going too old school?

The smell that people most commonly identify as "rotten egg" comes from sulfur. In the case of an overcharging battery it comes from the boiling sulfuric acid.

I dunno, the smell may also be associated with a bad cat, but I'm not sure I've ever heard that...

I agree! It's starting to sound like an amateur hour guessing game. By the way, did you check the muffler bearings or blinker fluid. LOL.

That blinker fluid is only $8.99 a gallon and may be the right answer
Order form here for $8.99 a gallon

I don't think the muffler bearings play into this specific issue, but it might. Replacements can be purchased online for $49.99.
Order form here for $49.99 each

Gear oil doesn't really smell like propane. It does have a strong odor though. Glad you discovered the issue. Is it just leaking or something worse?
