Default Can't get out of park!

Looked around at old post first for some information but could not find a clear answer, I have a 2002 Durango with 59,000 miles on it.It has the 4.7 V8 bone stock. It is full time AWD with the towing package. A few times now it gets stuck in park and I can not get it out of park. I have been lucky and some how after playing with it got it out of park. Took it in and a new shift linkage was put in. A few days later it got stuck again. the tow truck driver got it unstuck but had it towed back to the dealer. They kept it over night to see if the cold might have something to do with it but did not find anything. I am the only owner and it has been kept in a garage the whole time I have had it. I would be very thankful for any help and thoughts. Thanks.

The times you were stuck in park, were you in an incline or decline? Did you have your wheel turned? Did you have your e-brake engagaed? I'm asking these questions because they can cause the shifter to be held in place by the pressure of the gears against each other and the wheel lock being held in place. Next time, try putting on the e=brake to lessen the pressure on the gears and try turning your wheel further into the turn to see if that loosens up the shifter. HTH.

this is a pretty common issue, but also not hard to fix. there are two options,

1 is a long term fix, you take the boot off the end of the gear shift lever, and spray around in there with some lubricant (i prefer silicon based lubricant since it hangs around well, and will not absorb moisture from the air) and

2 is a short term fix, if you unplug the brake light switch it seems to disengage the lock, you can switch into nuetral and start the truck from there (plug the switch back in at this point, and make sure you use the parking brake while doing this)

+1 Dan.

Rock the vehicle to get it out of the bind. Should be fine thereafter. Easiest to do with two people.

Look at those miles... it's still brand new!

Maybe it is just stuck from lack of use

Hi, I'm looking at the same problem and it was mentioned on another post that it was the shifter Lock Solenoid. My problem is I can't find to purchase the Solenoid,(anyone give me a different name or a website.) If anyone has replace this,, if you have any tips would be great.. Thanks a bunch.
