Default How much engine noise with your 5.9?

Just curious how much engine noise everyone is getting with their 5.9L engines? I am getting noise from the oil pan area, not a tick or lifter or anything, just sounds like general engine noise, best way to describe is similar to that of a diesel sort of. Is this normal for your 5.9s?

I have the same noise from my motor, it almost sounds like an exhaust leak, but the mechanic who rebuilt my motor told me it's due to the rocker arms of the pistons and how big they are.

Are you referring to the noise around the 1600RPM to 1800RPM range?

This is more around idle. But to me, it just sounds like a big motor turning over. It definatelty isn't from the heads, and can only be clearly heard when you stand next to the wheel wells. A few mechanics have told me that the engine will need to break in also and may quiet some as it does.

My 3.9 always sounded loud to me for its size, which is why I am curious with the 5.9.

My muffler is on its last legs, so I'm getting a small amount of extra exhaust noise at the moment, but like harleytech, my engine is nice and quiet.

The only thing loud on my engine is the fan.

You may have a leak or broken weld in your exhaust system. Let me guess, you can hear it when you're parked or stopped but the sound gets lower when you're driving? Check your exhaust system. Not being an azz or anything, just a suggestion.

So, it's a recent rebuild?

Could be ping, you could try a higher octane fuel and see if that cures your issues.
