Default 4 x 4 won't disengage

My 2002 Durango 4.7 won't disengage to 2 wheel drive for about 3/4 of a mile down the road and when it does it makes a big clunk. In the 2002 it's the switch on the fly electronic switch on the dash. Does anyone know what I need to do about this?

Don't know what you need to do to fix it but you need to fix it soon in my honest opinion. Same thing happened to my Durango last year switching from 4-HI to AWD, ended up eventually tearing up the transfer case. Tore up a u-joint, bent the front drive shaft and had to have the transfer case rebuilt. The shop said the guts were in pieces.

What happened to mine may not be the same in your case but I wouldn't take any chances.

I forgot to add... One day I disengaged the 4-HI and it sounded like a large crunch under the truck. Then when driving it made the most horrific sound. Throw a handful of change in a dryer and turn it on, that;s what it sounded like.

Unplug the harness on the transfer case shift motor and look for corrosion.

Thank you ... I'll have to get under there and look for that ...
