Default Identify rear by VIN? and parts source?

Hello all, 1998 Durango 4WD 5.2 auto...

Is there a way I can tell if I have a trac-loc or open rear by the VIN?, or a sticker somewhere?

I know it's a 12 bolt 9.25" but haven't had the cover off or jacked up the rear (or tried a burnout -- rear is already noisy) to check...

I'm also looking for a good source for a used rear end, just got a quote from my mechanic for $1250 for parts and $500 for labor to rebuild the rear! Holy cow that's almost what I paid for the truck! Hoping I can find a complete rear for under $500 and swap it out myself?

Thanks all this is a great forum!

Joe

There should be a tag one of the cover bolts of the rear differential cover.

3.9 = 3.92 Gearing
3.5 = 3.55 Gearing

he doesnt care about that (i assume he has that infor already), he wants to know if he has a limited slip rear

easiest way is to jack the back of the truck up and spin the tire by hand, if the one opposite it turns the same way you have a lsd, if it spins the opposite way, you have an open diff.

if you are dead set against this just stop by your local dodge dealer w/ the vin # and ask them for a build sheet (should be free).

or go to dodge.com/owners and there is a link where you can put it in and dodge will email you a build sheet

I don't want to hijack the thread, but my build sheet came back with:
Axle Ratio - 3.55
Axle - Rear, Corporate 9.25 LD

Does the "LD" mean "Limited Slip" or am I looking at the wrong place?

Thanks

DSA Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle

That is on my build sheet for the limited slip right after what you see on yours.

Nothing on my build sheet about the axles after these two lines. I guess I don't have the Limited Slip Differential. Oh well! I've survived 11+ years so far without it so I guess it does not make a difference for my driving.

Thanks
