Because AWD uses an internal differential kind of setup to allow the front and rear wheels to turn at different speeds, but when in 4WD it locks to make the front and rear wheels turn at the same speed. 4 Low is used for maximum torque at low speeds, like pulling a trailer in snow, or up a wet boat ramp.

moparman got it right in his last post, however i disagree about awd being better, 4wd is is less likely to get stuck because the front and rear drivelines will always spin at the same speed, however w/ awd if you get one tire on ice, it will be similar to what happens w/ a 2wd open differential vehicle, that tire will spin and you will be going nowhere fast, now, modern(id say the last 5 years or so) awd systems have computer assist which can detect this spin and will apply the brake to just that wheel, this will make the other wheels (the ones with traction) recieve power and pull the vehicle thru.

Just imagine the day you're driving on a rainy road in AWD and the computer notices you have intermittent spin outs on various tires and it goes crazy and locks up the wrong wheels. OUCH!

i never said that i liked it, just thats how they do it, ill never own a vehicle set up that way, my moms x5 does it, im pretty sure the new jeep grand Cherokees are set up this way, id be willing the bet the new durango is this way (at least the awd models), with all this extra computer assist im really thinking about just keeping the D for ever and ever, swap a 5 spd manual in when my trans goes, and live on happily ever after.

Yeah, not a fan of awd. maybe in a car but not a truck anyways.
So in 4wd regardless if its part time or full time it will spin all tires at the same speed? Sounds like a gas guzzler to me lol.
Glad i have part time than. even though my D drinks alotta gas!
though when you say new awd drive cars have computer systems that sense slipping it just sounds like traction control to me.

its a similar system, hell might even be integrated with the traction control system, but traction control is something that is always active and monitoring the car, it senses when the radial g forces are reaching the cars limits (taking a turn too fast) and will let off the throttle, it will over-ride your gas pedal input if the computer thinks it will send the car into a skid/out of control, and a bunch of other things, that is the only example i have off the top of my head, and i have class to night, so im not looking up all the details right now, remind me at a later date and ill be glad to look into it a bit more for you (or you can use google and im sure you will see what i am talking about)
