Just saying that a plenum gakset job is basically rebuilding half your top end and it has to get done sooner or later.

Sounds to me the OP left the D at the shop right now, but I don't know what for. Just don't let him mess with the timing chain, that's an expensive job and like sharps said it's probably fine.

Well, runs like new for now. Just got it back. Replaced the Cap, rotor, plugs, plenum gasket, timing chain and gear, harmonic dampener, temp sensor and thermostat. Cost me $850, sure hope to hell it continues to run properly cuz im tapped on cash. So, as far as what the actual issue was I dont know but it was obviously one of the parts listed above. Ill let you guys know the results in about a week. Thanks to everyone who helped me out on this issue. From now on I think I will just do all of the work myself. Thanks all!

For all that work done it better run well from now on. Honestly $850 isn't bad at all for all the labor and parts though.

almost like the engine is out of balance and is using gas like crazy (about 9 miles to the gallon, prior to this I would average around 19 MPG).

How in the world were you getting 19 mpg to begin with???

I have a 5.2L 98 D and used to get around 19-22MPG on the highway, usually 19 in the winter and 22 on hot days if i was lucky, so about 20 avg. driving at around 64mph.

I found a sweet spot at around 67mph, just set the cruise and go. By the way, had to take it back to the shop this morning because it was running hot. He changed the thermostat and it seems to be ok now, but i was charged another $70. Kinda pissed me off.

At this point for all the money put in and work done, make sure you get, in writing, warrentys for everything he did, that way if there's another problem related to something he installed or did you have proof of everything right there. Works great everytime.
