sounds like someone missed a couple of wires when putting the dash back together, more than likely it was a ground that was left off, unfortunately this means you need to pull the dash again and check

Unfortunately I have to side with shrp on this one. Since you have an 01 and the 4wd selector is in the dash, it sounds like something got left undone. Check especially when you pull the dash in that cluster where the A/C and wiper controls are.

Also check where the radio is because I've seen before (not sure if the Durango had something like this) where there's a security feature where if the radio gets pulled a security light will come on. I'd check connections from the radio and around it to make sure it doesn't have some radio theft prevention system.

Double check the main harnesses on the drivers side under the fuse panel for a loose one. There are a couple of them.
