Default Trans HELP!!

Okay so here's what I got. '99 4x4 5.9 46re trans. I had it rebuild approx. 3 months ago. Was supposed to include all new sensors, shift solenoids, and whatever clutch discs are normally included, as well as reman'd torque converter. Now the shop that rebuilt it said they did a few "mods" , something about a thicker washer, and something esle on the valve body. The trans shifts out great no prob there until it gets to overdrive then it trips a code and defaults to third gear. I had the shop pull the code he cleared it then said see if it happens again. It did, so they replaced the shift solenoid. I drove it for week and it happened again. If I drive with OD off no problems, turn it on and it defaults. Unfortunately I don't have the code, however the shop said it was only one code and could be one of three things. The shift solenoid, a relay(they didn't think it was this since it only threw one code), or the tcm(?) Sorry for the long paragraph, I just wanted to give all the details. Oh yeah they did tell me it's not a warranty issue anymore. any help would be great.

it sounds to me like the shop is trying to screw you, the 46re does not have a TCM hooked up to it, the only transmission that does is the 45 and 545 rfe, and they were not offered w/ the 5.9, take it back and make them fix it, 3 months it should still be under warranty

if you are dead set against making them fix it (idk why you would be) get in touch with user master tech, he is the local transmission expert

I know the trans is electrically controlled. If there is no TCM, then would it be safe to assume that the main computer in the engine bay controls all the shifting.

Agreed, overdrive should work too since it's part of the transmission. I'm curious to find out what kind of code it's throwing that will cause it to (probably failsafe) down to 3rd gear, never heard of that one before. The overdrive unit isn't technically "part" of the transmission as it's just bolted onto the back but it does share the same valve body as the rest, so it is kind of a "seperate" unit.

As shrpshtr said, there is no transmission control module (TCM) on the 46re or 5.9, all the transmission and valve body sensors and soleniods connect to the PCM which controls all that.

I have no idea what that shop is trying to hide, but it seems exactly to me like they messed something up and don't feel like taking the whole transmission apart again to correct it free of charge. Another rare option is taking your D to another shop, have them fix the problem and split the bill with the first shop.

the 46re has an electronically controlled OD the rest is done by hydraulic pressure, which is controlled by your speed and the valve bodies, its much more hydraulic than many people think

So the shop "modded" his tranny but f***ed it up?... Take it back and tell them to repair or replace it with a new OEM or they'll be seeing your lawyer and the BBB.

Warlock:

Most trans places give you 12mo/12k warranty. Since there has been a history here, continue to politely press them to make it right.

You will always do better in the long run with sugar than vinegar.

It throws code-P0753 shift solenoid A electric. Now the shop has already supposedly changed the internal wiring harness and the shift solenoid. Anybody have any ideas? I don't want to go back there until I know more about what is happening. I don't mind pushing them to honor something I just need to know I'm in the right. Oh yeah they also cleaned all the connectors they had to touch during the rebuild, after I took it back because of this code.
