Transmission ID help
Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for a little bit of help on ID'ing my transmission. I have a 2002 SLT+ 5.9l. Looking at the service manual, you would be led to believe that I have a 46RE trans. However, the 46RE is a 3 speed with overdrive - total of 4 fwd gears.
Now, when I watch my tach and pay close attention to the transmission, with the Overdrive OFF, I'll swear that I have 4 speeds. Once in top gear if I switch overdrive back on, it will change up. Total gears now 5.
I cannot find any reference to a trans with 4 + overdrive.
The gear selector has 1,2, and D range, with the overdrive on the end of the lever.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Oh, by the way, before anyone says look at the ID stampings on trans, I've done this and would you believe that someone in the past (I'm owner #3) has ground the ID markings off the trans! Bit fishy if you ask me.
Thanks in advance!

You have the 46re as this was the only transmission behind the 5.9L engine. Mine is the same way as you're describing. It's a 4 speed transmission with automatic overdrive and it's electronically controlled with a lock-up torque converter.
