If I was going to pick a part to be worried about being removed it would not be the CV shafts or the front driveshaft but the diff itself. Depending on how it is mounted in the chassis it could very well add structure to the front end. Removing the CV's would remove stress from the bearings not add it. The CV shaft does not hold anything in as far as the bearings go or anything else.

I still would not do it but wheels falling off would not be a concern to me.

Wouldn't that be 4FT? I don't think that's an AWD case... And I hear ya on the "usually doesn't" part... That case can be a royal pain in the *** to get back into 2WD unless you catch it in a good mood. (And, yes, the NV242HD transfer case does have "moods".)

And you really drive it in 4FT all the time? I know that gear is supposed to be ok for "all road surfaces" but I'd still be uncomfortable using it 100% of the time, just for mpg reasons if nothing else....

Well 4FT and AWD are the same thing, just diffrent names. I actually get a tiny bit more MPGs having it in 4WD than 2WD because the front diff. spinning is actually being put to use instead of dragging everything down if that makes sense. 4WD doesn't get you any less MPGs because it's just splitting the load between the front and rear tires now, the same amount of torque output is still leaving the transmission either way.

I drive it in FT 99.9% of the time, there's an open diff. in the t-case when it's in FT so there's no axel binding or anything. Splits the load between the front and rear diffs. too so the rear isn't getting beat up on so much.

When I was in 4FT I always lost quite a bit of MPG's.

Next, AWD and 4FT are 2 different beasts. I'm not going to rehash an old thread: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...ow-hi-awd.html

You will wear out the transfer case that way.....IMHO

OPERATING RANGES
NV242 operating ranges are 2WD (2-wheel drive),
4x4 part-time, 4x4 full time, and 4 Lo.
The 2WD and 4x4 full time ranges can be used at
any time and on any road surface.

The 4x4 part-time and 4 Lo ranges are for off road
use only. The only time these ranges can be used on
hard surface roads.

*EDIT* Anyway, I wonder if you having it in 4FT did your transmission in? https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...ting-9mpg.html

haha nahh I've been running my t-case in FT ever since I installed it about a year ago, I've seen excellent MPGs all the way. But my D is on it's way to the scrap yard now so it's getting infinity MPGs now on a tow truck haha.
