I've been seeing computers for the 5.9 working with the 5.2,but what about the other way around? Will a 1999 5.2 computer work with a 1998 5.9?

I'm fairly certain the PCM in my 99 Durango is fried. Can I put the one from my '01 Ram Van with a 5.2 in it? I just need to get the thing home.

I haven't checked but I assume the one in my pre OBD2 96 ram van with a 5.9 most likely has a different computer setup.

Nope. Too much changed from 97 to 98. The entire communication bus is different.

Your 96 van *should* be OBD2 though. Have a look, three connectors, is OBD2, one big connector, OBD1.

If anyone knows the answer to this this would be very helpful I have a 1998 Dodge ram 5.9 l V8 and the pcm is a 5 point to I'm trying to diagnose a rough idle and badd gas mileage I've check the plenum gasket and it is fine there is no vacuum at all when I unplug the PCV valve tube that is connected to the intake and plug the tube and the nipple on the intake and take the crankcase breather off to see if there is any vacuum there is none I've also check the pulse with injectors I've also checked the injectors I've check the voltage to the map sensor which is 5 V at idle and it should be at 1.5 to 2.5 V I'm wondering if the PCM is causing my map sensor to run different And what would be the Difference Preformance wise from a 5.2 and a 5.9 pcm???

and the pcm for the 5.2 and 5.9 are similar, and the 5.9 will run w/ a 5.2 pcm, but will not run 100%, it is NOT to be used as a long term solution. you can buy pcms on ebay pre-flashed to your truck for a reasonable price, then they are just plug and play once you get em
i have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 5.9L gas and the truck has a 5.2L pcm and i am diagnosing a rough idle ive checked plenum gasket, cap router wires plugs, map, tps, iac, iat, injectors, evap canister, and my map vacuum is 20 mmhg, just wondering if my symptoms are caused from the 5.2 pcm?????????????

Entirely possible. At idle, the PCM runs off of tables, ignoring the O2 sensor. Since the 5.2 wants less gas at idle, that's what the PCM is doing. The 5.9 may suffer from a lean-burn miss due to that. If you just barely crack open the throttle, and the engine smooths out, there is your problem.

Dealer should be able to flash your PCM for the correct engine size.

Trying to match the right PCM to my truck if there is a way that you know how to do this that would be awesome.
I've tried to match the (von) number on the door jam label and I've tried to decode the Vin number to match the correct PCM.
I noticed on eBay that there are different programs for different 5.9 models like AC,AE,AH how do i determine what programming i need for my truck????

Look at the part number of the PCM...... the last two letters are simply the revision. If the part numbers match, it will work. You will have to have the pcm flashed for your vin though, else, various systems get offended, and won't work. (ABS, and airbag) Also may not hurt to make sure it is flashed for the correct engine/trans combo......

My pcm in the truck is a 5.2 but my engine is a 5.9 i dont want to buy another 5.2 ive been trying to diagnose a cylinder 5 misfire (p0305) i jave checked everything that could possibly cause this i even re routed the plug wires to a dodge forum specs the only thing i can think of is the 5.2 pcm is not letting the truck operate 100% and i checked the plenum for vacuum and there is none

Erm, I think I missed something on that last part. There should be plenty of vacuum in the plenum at idle..... are you thinking plenum pan? And you don't think there is a leak?? Have you looked inside?

Verify you are getting spark, and injector pulse on number 5. If that is all good, swap the injector on 5 and 7, see if anything changes. Compression test wouldn't hurt either.
