Trans fluid??
ATF+4 sounds familiar. I had Oil Change, differential and Transfer case servicing although I can't find the invoice now, ATF+4 sounds familiar. I am not trying to backtrack on my original answer but I remember getting ATF+4 when I was going to do it myself (Before I remembered my gravity lessons and realized that it is easier to have the pros insert with filling gun)...Yes I ran a couple of weeks without fluid in the X-Fer case. I drained but wasn't able to fill. NOTE: I remembered it was without fluid and it was well before Winter and 4X4 was not used. When I hit Valvoline I got the Oil Change and pre winter Differential (Frt/Rear) and Transfer Case servicing all done at the same time.

Well, I R one so i guess it fits well...
"Hydra Southeast" huh......LOL
Anyway, ya the manual only calls for ATF+4 in all of the Transfer Cases.
This thread does bring up an old coversation however I had with the company that built my T-case in my old Durango. I asked him his opinion on gear oil in the T-case and wether it would be better or worse. Now this shop builds some of the best T-cases OEM or super modified you can buy. So he isn't exactly stupid......LOL
Anyway, we were talking about the NV242HD in particular and he stated that the way it was internally, well it most likely wouldn't matter if I used ATF+4 or 80W-90 but prefered 75W-90 Fully Synthetic. The inner workings of a NV242HD is a basic gear box so it shouldn't matter. I stated that I would rather leave it with ATF+4, but it was kinda fun to bounce the idea off him for his opinion.

As for the brand, I've always used Valvoline ATF (currently +4) it's good stuff and I've never had any kind of transmission or transfer case issues in any of the seven full size 4x4 trucks, two Jeep Wranglers and four Grand Cherokees I've owned over the years. Unless I happen to step into a deal like I just did for Royal Purple at 40% off, I pretty much stick to Valvoline Synthetic in the crankcase as well.
And to get off the topic, I also hate that the trannies are sealed in modern vehicles. I changed the oil in my mom's '10 Dodge Journey and went to check all the fluids and was like WTF???

I use the same. Valvoline ATF+4 Fully Synthetic because technically it isn't a Fully Synthetic because it's a hydra-cracked base oil, however it's the best out there right now avalible because no one makes a Polly based Fullyt Synthetic base oil for ATF+4.
Now there are ATF Fully synthetics out there like Mobil One and Royal Purple, but they won't, or can't back their product with testing by Chrysler as declaired to meet the copy rights of Chysler to be concitered ATF+4. In other words, if a company claims to be ATF+4 compatable then it must PROVE that they build it to their specifications or better by way of 3rd party testing. Nobody has stepped up to the plate other that Valvoline, which is kinda strange for Mobil One but hey, it costs money.
With that said, Valvoline ATF+4 Fully Synthetic is what I use in my trans and T-case and that's all I use. It only comes in quarts, 5 gal containers, or 55 gallon drums however. They don't make gallon bottles dammit!
