Default 98 durango 5.9 transmission issue

Shifting from 1-2 is a bit rough, if I put my foot into it the slightest bit. If I really baby it, it will shift fine.

When in 4th, doing around 80km/hr and I go out to pass, the rpms will fly up, but takes a while for any increase in speed.

Obviously checked the basics, fluid level is good, looks fairly clean. No visible leaks.

Any ideas?

When was the last fluid and filter change? I would say start there and see if it improves. Then do a band adjustment.

Mine did the same thing back in 2009. Forever to shift from 1st to 2nd and when cruising in 4th or O.D. the slightest pressure on the gas pedal and the truck downshifted and upshifted like crazy. I waited too long to do mine and had to get it rebuilt. Tore the **** out of the guts. Luckily I still had a warranty so I only paid a $500 deductible but the total was $2300. Take care of it now before it's too late.

i agree start w/ a fluid/filter change and have the bands adjusted at the same time (the pan has to come off to adjust the bands), make sure to use ONLY ATF+4, and to NEVER FLUSH the transmission

Exactly where I would start. Replacing the fluid first then finding out that didn't do it and having to drop the pan again to adjust the bands is just a burden no one wants to do more than once in a week. LOL

Like shrp said only use ATF +4 and if those above don't help it could be a bad shift solenoid.

I have the same year and engine as yours. Mine did the exact same thing as yours. I changed the output speed sensor on the transmission and it shifted normally after that. $20 part and 3 mins to change.

+1 on the output sensor and trans fluid and filter and adjustment on your year. Ensure you only use ATF+4 fluid ONLY.

Also this could be a plugged CAT as well.

Ok, I'll give that a try. Changed fluid, and filter.. adjusted bands. Was an overall decent improvement, but still not how it should be.

I'll try the output speed sensor and see what happens
