Default 2001 r/t rear axle interchangability

I have a 8.25 with the 3.92 gears currently in my Durango and would like to upgrade to the 9.25 rear end can i get one out of a pickup or is the axle housing a different length and can anyone tell me why Dodge would stick the smaller rearend in the r/t anyway. I am getting tired of replacing the clutches for the limited slip as i keep breaking them and the carrier is starting to look a bit rough from the broken discs banging around in it. So my plan is to get a 9.25 and build it up so when this one does explode i have it ready to go

to my knowledge the r/t only came w/ the 9.25, sounds like the previous owner cheaped out on a repair and put the 8.25 in.

the 9.25 off the dakota should be the same size as the one in the durango if you need to go that route to find one, and the lsd that dodge offers from the factory is not that great anyway (why you keep having to repair if) id look into an aftermarket solution

I have an 01 Durango R/T too. Just checked my build sheet and it shows "DRAP Corporate 8.25 Rear Axle". Was the 9.25 an option?

Its the original factory installed axle and i have no intention of using the factory lsd when i build the new 9.25 rear end. I just was wondering what Dodge was thinking when they stuck a weaker rear end in a higher horsepower R/T . I guess I will just climb under my friends 03 1500 and measure it one of these days to see if they are the same width.

the rams are wider than the durangos im 99% sure of that, axles that will work off a dodge vehicle are from a durango or dakota (clearly i am mistaken that the R/Ts came w/ the 9.25 as standard feature), but yes the 9.25 was an option on the durango, i have one, and so do many others, they were definitely part of the towing package, im not sure what else included them.

It was included in the Heavy Duty group and also included in the towing group. I just know this because mine does not have towing package but does have the 'Heavy Duty Group' that includes the Corporate 9 rear end.

As for it pairing up with the Ram, no it will not and it definitely will not with an 03 Ram. The 03 Ram has a completely different designed rear end from the 01 Durango and it will just not work.

There was 4 options,

Chryser Corporate 9.25
Chryser Corporate 9.25 LS

Chryser Corporate 8.25
Chryser Corporate 8.25 LS

It sounds like either you have a carrier that has broken down and that is causing the clips in the carrier to bend and/or break causing the clutches to fail. You have 3 options:

1. You can go to a different complete axel and housing (basically a 9.25 of your choice).
2. Replace the carrier that has worn out causing the issue in the first place.
3. Install a locker/posi.

Personally, the 8.25 should be fine if you don't tow much and you should just pull the cluch packs and spider gears and replace it with a locker/pt locker or open carrier. http://www.ringpinion.com/PartCats.a...D=2&DiffID=287

Default rear diff //?

Hey Hydra, my 2001 Durango Sport has the 9.25 LD rear with 3.55 gears, ( no towing package from the factory but I added a class3 Curt hitch and brake controller/T- connecter light kit), does the "LD" stand for light duty? I tow my 18 foot Car Hauler with it (max 5,000 lb load), do you think my D can handle it ? (of course I turn off the overdrive when towing)...kingoftow

Kingoftow, it depends which engine you have and I'm not sure about the 4.7 but if you have the 5.9 and 2WD you can tow up to like 7,300#.

I've towed about 6,000# at least twice a week since just after I got my Durango with the same setup, with 2WD and the 5.9 engine and it does great. Ive actually towed up to 9,000# however it's not suggested, and it did very well doing so.

These are towing machines and do great at whatever you throw at them. Oh and I have a Class V hitch. Had custom done by a friend of mine that is welded straight to the frame and also bolted down in 8 spots. It's also WD up to like 40% of weight.

The LD stands for Light Duty.

Your D should handle that but I would install a transmission cooler to keep it cool.
