Default 2000 Durango - stuck in 4wd - bracket broke

Hi - Newbe here - I have a 2000 Dodge Durango. I dont use it much but recently put it into 4wd simply to move the fluids around a bit. When I went to put it back into 2wd, the bracket underneath (I think on the transfer case) broke. Now the lever-arm (to move it from between 2wd / 4wd) simply flops forward or back, no longer connected. The dealer sold me a bracket and gromet and said its an easy do-it-yourself fix.

I'm guessing I need to remove the console to expose the hardware in order to replace these parts. Is that correct and what involved in removing the console?

I'm not a handy kind of guy so I'm already at a disadvantage. Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks

Everything you need to work on is under the truck, just crawl under there and take a peek, the problem will be obvious. Sounds like you just slipped the pinch joint right off the end of the rod, it could just be a matter of slipping the rod back in the joint, tightening up that bolt and you're all good to go. Just try to find some rust marks or some kind of refference as to where everything was seated before so your shifter is pointing to the right indicater on the sticker next to it.

Thanks Evon. a 6" rod fell on the ground under the spot. Its clearly the piece that connects into each rubber grommet. (Its straight for about 4 inches and the bows like a 1/2 circle. Each end is pinched as to slip into and hold in place, a grommet)

I looked underneath and theres very little room. Thats why I was thinking for this to be an easy fix like the dealer said, it must be from inside the vehicle. I dont think I can get into the area to put all this back from underneath the vehicle...

You can access it from inside if you really needed to but it's a pain to get to, you'd have to remove the center console, and then the trim panel on the floor that goes around the shifter, that panel just snaps in place so just pry it up. Then there's small bolts you remove all around the dust boot for the shifter and pull that up and you'll have small access space all around the shifter then.

the easiest way to do it is from underneath the truck, if you wanted to try it from inside it would be as evon said, however i dont think you can reach both ends from inside the truck, the opening in the floor for the shifter is NOT that big

If you have no luck getting it from under the truck, just unbolt the whole shifter assembly from the transmission housing, it's just 2 bolts, that should get things moved out of the way to work on it from under or inside.

You do it under the truck!

First download a Service Manual with pictures and slide under there and hook it up: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=c...3f6w4a6wme00,1
