Default 98 Durango SLT rear hatch lock wont open!!!

the key doesn't work it wont turn, the OEM key fob works, i hear the lock tumble but it won't open

1. what can be done?

2. can i fix it myself?

3. how much does the dealer charge? and does it solve the problem?

4. is there a way to by pass this?

HELP!! wife is going crazy about this!

1. You will have to open up the rear back panel and check to make sure everything turns as it should and you should be able to get a good idea of what is going on with a front row seat to it all.

2. It sounds to me like the lock actuator has going out on it and needs to be replaced. Yes you can do this yourself and it is not a hard fix at all.

3. I work at a dealership and for a new lock actuator runs around $150-$200 installed with a year warranty, not including tax or shop supplies.

4. No there's really not a way to bypass it because the actuator is basically the part that unlocks it and locks it.

i think the actuator is fine if the remote locks are still working, tho you do need to open up the liftgate sounds to me like the lock cylinder is siezed/rusted in place

He also said with the key fob he hears it tumble but it doesn't unlock that's why I guessed actuator. I agree the cylinder is also either seized or maybe it got replaced and wasn't keyed to use the same key. LOL you never know.

i took that to mean the remote works to lock/unlock it and the key doesnt, i guess we will have to wait for him to clarify
