98 4x4 slt howl
so ever since i purchased my vehicle there has been this howl while accelerating, and it seems to be getting louder as of late. the shop said it was the rear axle bearings so we replaced those but the howl is still there. people tell me it just sounds like a truck but ive ridden in other rango's and none of them howl like this... my cousin has the same rig and said to check the U-joints... im just curious if any of you on here have any suggestions.
thanks
thanks
Can you pinpoint where exactly its coming from in the rear. Since you say U-joints and rear end I'm guessing it's coming from the rear. Best way to do this is get a buddy toned in the back while you're driving and find exactly where it's coming from.
Good call on the rear end bearings first because thats where I would have checked first as well.
Does it just do it while you're driving or does it do it in park too? Also you can drive down the road going a decent speed, put it in Neutral and see if it does anything to help the noise. Could be a bad wheel bearing.

i know its not the wheel bearings... i just did those... it makes the howl when i push on the accelerator. it stops when i let up and am coasting... doesn't make the noise when in park, ill check on in neutral... im fairly certain its the u joint... i cant think of anything else in that general area that would be making that noise...
Do you know if it has a limited slip differential? Maybe the friction modifier has broken down. This doesn't fit your symptoms perfectly, but I'm throwing it out there because it would be a relatively cheap fix.

i never heard of u joints making a howling noise. They will make a clunk when u put it in gear or vibrate the truck when accelerating or driving. i was gunna guess wheel bearings but u said u already replaced them so prob in the rear end. imo my truck is the loudest one i have drove. the front and back both make noise. a few easy fixes are turn up the radio or get an exhaust.

ive driven other durango's same as mine and it doesn't howl like this...
i fail to see how getting an exhaust is an easy fix... sure as hell isn't a cheep one
