Default transfer case troubles

I have a 99 Durango 5.9 liter, auto, 4x4, and NP242D transfer case that the drain plug fell out of while my daughter was driving for a while. I don't know how long it ran that way but it was a little while I'm sure. I put a new drain plug in and refilled with oil but now it won't stay in 2wd. It constantly jumps into a neutral position. I haven't been able to find a good used case yet but have a friend with a 99D with a 5.2 that he's parting out and I can get his cheap. I guess my question is will these interchange without major problems and a lot of expense? Thanks for any info you can give me.

As long as it's the same transfer case it should be a direct swap.

It most likely would not be the same T-case (should be the NV231), but I think it should bolt up however I have not tried it before.

Personally, I would drop your NV242HD T-case out and take it to a shop and have it rebuilt. Most likely the bearings are bad and that is what is causing the problem. Replace the chain and reinstall yours. That way it shouldn't cost you very much and you get the better T-case.

The problem is he has a NP231D and I have a NP242D. I could also use his driveshaft and shifter.

Thanks I think I'll just get it rebuilt. Is that something I could do myself. I am a mechanic on Large trucks so I do have some mechanical ability

The NP means (New Process) which is a well known type, however the actual number of the case is NV (New Venture). The New Venture allows the new style T-case's front or rear axles to lock and move at separate intervals.

1998-1999 Durango Transfer Cases are:

NV231
NV242 (Also better known as the NV242HD)

Now with that out of the way, sounds like you could rebuild it yourself using a manual if you have the tools: http://www.mediafire.com/?4f2n2mmkyhz read through and check it out.

I put the 231 in until or if the 242 can be rebuilt. Bolted up with no trouble other than 1 bolt in a stupid place to get to and the indicator switch is different so will they interchange til I get the 242 rebuilt?

Are you drunk already this morning???.......A little early.......

So you installed the 231 while you are waiting? Regardless, as long as you are in 2WD and it bolts in you should be just fine while you wait for the rebuild.

Then again I would get a new position switch and pre-fill the rebuilt 242 Transfer Case with Valvoline Fully Synthetic ATF+4 fluid before installation.

+1 to that thought! I'd use either Valvoline or Castrol, I've had success with both of them.
