Default Fuel pump ( maybe? )

I have a 2003 durango with 140,000 miles on it. Yesterday while driving it shut off doing 50 mph, engine light came on, drifted over to the side of the road turned key off, got out no fluid on the ground, got back in and started right up!
Today, went to start it and it cranked for 3-4 seconds (not normal) then started. Same thing again will not start like it should! I was told Iam on borrowed time already with the fuel pump being the origional one. And they usually last 100,000 miles. Now Iam afraid to drive it any where because it might not start and then I have to get it towed for more $$ . Once started and driving could the pump just quit and make the engine stop and leave you stranded? I know these are in the tank so its going to be a job in a half. any info is appreciated along with some good aftermarket brands to look at. thanks

To answer your question. Yes, the pump can die and leave you stranded. Happened to me when my fuel pump decided to take a permanent vacation. Luckily it died in front of a friends house who gave me a hand changing it.

Yes again, it is a job and a half. But it does go back together twice as fast as it does taking it apart.

If it turns out to be the pump make sure you have little gas in the tank. Makes taking it off and dropping it easier without all that extra weight.

Sounds like a fuel pump or coil to me.

UPDATE:

Did some looking into the issue and decided to take the chance to drive the vehicle to have the check engine light checked. Two codes came up as noted.

P0344 camshaft position sensor
P0340 camshaft position sensor

Parts had one in stock and got it. Put it in and turn key and fire right up. Started now for 7-10 times normal now so we will see what happens..

Oh yeh The sensor is located underneath the air cleaner on the passenger side, you have to remove the air box. The sensor is right on the engine block! will keep you posted in a few days!!

Incorrect codes, but it sounds like you might have fixed your problem.

Hopefully when you say this you mean the parts counter at your dealership had one in stock. Believe it or not this is one of the single most sensors I replace in any Mopar vehicle simply due to the fact they didn't install a Genuine Mopar sensor. We actually had a guy that insisted he needed a PCM flash after he changed the sensor and nothing happened... We did the PCM flash and nothing happened so he broke down and had to buy a new CPS and after replacing the brand new Autozone sensor, she ran like a champ!
