Default broken durango

'98 Durango. Put the key in and turn to on (not start) all lights come on (normal) turn to start and all power is gone (lights out). Turn key back to off and there is a 'click' from the glove box area. Turning the headlights off and on repeatedly seems to reset this problem, but can't start the SUV. It seems like it may be a security system problem.

Any thoughts?

thanks
Jimmi

Well I know even if you have a copied key without the chip, the truck will start but it will also turn off after about 5 seconds. You are using an original or programmed key, correct?

That's an interesting point. i'm thinking it could be a solinoid for the starter or something that has gone out and is holding the system down. Maybe a bad ballast or relay. Electrical technical is not really my forte.

Sounds like you have a correded battery cable running to your stater soleniod. Had the same thing happen to my Jeep last month. The tetminals where nice and clean but inside the plastic it was all correded and couldn't get a good charge.
