This should be illegal. The plugs in a 5.9 is not that hard to do.

 

Thanks for the advice everybody. Sounds pretty unanimous; 4 hrs/$550 is rediculous for this job. So ... she and her boyfriend are going to tackle Plug #6 themselves, then I get to spend part of my vacation visiting her doing the rest of the job.

By the way, it was the Chrysler/Dodge dealer in Silverthorne CO that quoted this. I mean, yeah, maybe things are slightly more expensive in the high rockies, but that's rediculous.

 

The 4.7 doesn't have a cap/rotor, or plug wires though, they have the coil on plug setup.

 

In a way that doesn't surprise me, It seems like some things tend to be very overpriced around the resort towns.

 

The plugs on my 2003 4.7 were absolute cake to get to. Well - there were a couple small things in the way - the air horn coming off was necessary - a hose clamp and a control wire. I loosened the brackets on a cooling hose, just to make life easier.

The 2003 4.7 has coil packs, so no plug wires even needed...

I asked a shop a while back near me and they told me $250.00, I almost couldn't contain my laughter walking out the door. Heck, I got quoted less for a ball-joint replacement, which - wasn't hard either.

She should shop around, or heck maybe even find someone on Craigslist looking for some extra work... well, that's risky unless at least one person is around that has a good idea behind the theory of car repair. She definately needs to shop around. If it was just my neighbor asking me to tune up a Dodge Truck like mine or even a '99 - if I charged over $100.00, I'd feel guilty. But that's why I don't offer to work on too many cars... I'm too easy going, lol

Heck, if she lives around Cincinnati, PM me - I know a few good backyard mechanics, plus I'm not a freak. Can't be too careful now a days I guess either way.

 

For the record, I asked up front and there's actually a menu price rather than charging per part/hourly of $140. That means if you come in and want a tune-up for an 8 cylinder engine it's $140 regardless if it takes 5 hours or half an hour to do it.
