Cool Blower Motor - Not working at all.

Just curious - I know there are 1000 threads on here about the Durango Blower motors, but still I'd like to post this question since almost all were dealing with the 'only works on high' issue.

I've had that issue and replaced the resistor about 3 years ago, been fine since; until last night.

The blower motor just totally stopped on me while driving. I turned it off for maybe 5 minutes and turned it back on - it started working again. Go in and eat with a friend and after coming back out (hour later) it wouldn't work at all.

Still not working this morning - not on high or low; at all. The AC compressor is working fine - the light comes on and I can hear it kick in.

Could that still be the resistor even though it's not working on high either? Just curious if maybe there's another relay or something that's more apt to cause that.

I did see the recent thread about the ignition switch too, so I'll keep that in mind. Maybe - if anyone knows, what all could possibly cause this?

Blower Motor
Fuse
Resistor on Passenger Side

Any other relays, etc I should check?

Thanks

Check the plug / wires that go onto the resistor. The first two wires (I think they're green, but they are a heavier gauge than the others) have a tendency to get hot and melt the connector. Also, I found on mine that condensation must have gotten onto the contacts because they were pretty corroded causing an intermittent connection.

New plug from dealer is something like 35 bucks or so, about a 20 minute job to splice and replace.

since your problem seems to be coming and going i would take it and clean the contacts first, then check the grounds, then the contacts at the fuse, it sounds to me more like a loose/dirty connection issue than a bad blower, especially since you said all speeds were working when it was working.

Thanks for the input - took your advice. I started with the Blower Motor Resistor - being the easiest to get to. Was going to check/clean the connections, but the second contact was melted a bit, along with the resistor - which looked like it was shot.

Got a new Resistor, the harness was a bit 'iffy', being melted a hair, but it worked ok; didn't look so bad that it would be a hazard - that was the more costly part if I recall from the last repair when I had to replace the harness.

I'm thinking now, I'll just replace this resistor each spring, lol.

glad the new resistor fixed it, but if you keep going through resistors and melting connectors that means the blower is drawing too much current through the wires, either from a short or the motor is slowly reaching the EOL

You may not be out of the woods yet... I replaced my resistor twice before I had to replace the pigtail. It overheated to the point that it was basically welded to the resistor. Pigtail & resistor package from the dealer was $70

+1 I think a LOT of us have seen this one. Get in there and replace the harness now while you can still get it off the resistor, other wise you'll be replacing the resistor again. FWIW, I bought mine at AutoZone for $18 and it had a "lifetime" warranty. Threw the reciept in the glovebox and produced it when it went again last month (no low speed). They gave me a new one no questions asked.
