Default Tire ? and recommendations

Hello again all you experts :-)

Got a few questions on the tires for my 1998 Durango SLT 5.2 4wd.

The truck currently has Goodyear Wrangler 235x75R15s, on the stock wheels, need replacement soon.

The door jamb sticker says the tire size is 235x75R15; however, the build sheet I got from Dodge sending them my VIN says the truck came with the 31x10.5x15 tires, and the spare (which appears to be original) is also 31x10.5x15.

So;

1. which tire size do you think came with the truck OE?

2. What suggestions do y'all have between the 2 sizes 235x75R15 and the 31x10.5x15? Most of my driving is on the street, no off road, but I use the truck mainly in the winter and I want the best snow traction possible.

3. Will the 31x10.5.15 tires fit on my stock (I think they are 7" wide) rims?

4. I think the 31s are a little taller than the 235s, will that make much of a difference in speedometer accuracy, if so how much? (the OE tires may even have been 31s see above)

Thanks again everyone!

if your rango came with 31's and now there's 235's your speedo is wrong yes the 31 is a taller tire i would put 31's back on it they will give a little more ground clearance

yes the 31's will fit your truck and you'll be happier with them... the 235 tires aren't as wide and and are smaller... about 28 or 29 inches if i remember right... if you want a good all round tire for everything bfg all-terrains are good so are kumho Road Venture MT KL71. the 235/75r15 are not as wide as the 31s, the 31s are wider giving a biger surface area.

if the spare is a goodyear wrangler rt/s i believe its probably stock and if thats the case i would put 31s back on the truck, yes they will fit the stock ride height just fine, and will be wider than the 235s (wider = bigger traction patch)

Thanks again everyone!

1. Your truck came stock with 31x10.5.15 tires on your stock rims.

2. Get the correct size back on it. I would sugest BFG KO series or Michelin.

3. Yes they will fit. The previous owner put the smaller tires on to save a buck. The door jamb states the 235's as that was what was standered, but not what your truck came with. You should put the 31's on to get your speedometer back on the correct value.

4. Like I said up there ^^^^^ it will actually put it on instead of it reading high right now. You see you are spinning smaller tires right now so your truck says you are doing 75 MPH but insted you are actually only going like 70 MPH. Your speedometer is already off, by putting the correct tire (31) back on your speedo will be back on and will read correctly.

I would definitely go back to the 31x10.50r15. That's the size I had on my Durango until I let my wife put tires on it while I was at work. I ended up with a set of 235/75r15 Kumho Solus tires. She saved a few bucks but annoyed me to no end. I would recommend that you get a set of Hankook DynaPro ATM tires. I've got a set of these on my 2000 Chevy Silverado and they are an excellent All Terrain tire. I beat the hell out of them on a daily basis and they just beg for more. I drive them on a lot of highway, alot of desert/gravel mixture, and tow a 20 foot travel trailer, all on these tires. I've only had them in snow twice, but both times the snow was deep and off paved roads in the Oregon mountains and it handled it well. I can't say enough good about them for sure.

I was under the impression that all 4x4 models came with 265s, but maybe that was just for 16" rims. I have a set of 235/85 R16s on my 2001 and they are 31s. Like Hydra said in another thread, Wal-Mart Techs are idiots and they told me a 265 wouldn't fit with the aggressive tread I chose.

LOL

Ya,

The older versions had 15 inch rims, and came with the 31's or the 235's. Best way to know without a build sheet is to look at the spare tire believe it or not.

Thanks everyone for all the advice, I'll most likely be buying a new set of tires in the 31" inch size, probably the Kumhos or the BFG KOs :-)
