Default ATF+3 vs. ATF+4

Hello everyone. I know there is a few threads on here that concerns the differences between AFT+3 and ATF+4 but i want to clear everything up. I went to Bessey Motors yesterday in South Paris, Maine which is a Dodge dealer and asked them if they had any ATF+3. The guy in the service department said ATF+4 superseded ATF+3 and they've been using it for years. So my question is sense none of the local parts stores carry ATF+3 where do I buy it? Is there a company online that still sells it? Thanks, Joe.

Not unless they have unsold stuff that is like 6 yrs old. They quit making atf+3 in 2005 I think was the year. Use atf+4 it is better performing.

You can still buy it off the web but that is about it, not to mention it should be very old fluid anyway. Just switch over to ATF+4 and be done with it.

What do you need ATF +3 for anyways? They don't manufacture ATF +3 anymore and basically it was taken over by +4. Use +4 because it is compatibly with eachother, and if you're inquiring about your Durango, it takes ATF +4 anyways.

It does, but I chrysler recommends atf+4 where atf+3 was used. I just switched out to atf+4, I used valvoline and what a difference in transmission performance. Trust us just switch to atf+4. Atf+4 is full synthetic and takes high temperatures better as well as rust and corrosion protection.

+4 Like Hydra says.. switch to +4 and be done with it. +4 is backwards compatible with the earlier versions. I personally have had pretty good luck with Valvoline ATF+4 I would try VIP or NAPA I definitely know NAPA carries it or at least as of late 2009 did. I am not sure if A/Z has made it that far north yet but try VIP. Car Quest I believe is the other regional chain is is still around? I am form Maine I have heard of Bessey Motors. I would get everything at the dealer I know it might be more expensive but one stop shopping and you know your getting the right items. Basically MOPAR or Valvoline ATF+4 would be my recommendations.

Also if you choose the Valvoline route from NAPA or VIP I strongly recommend getting all bottles in the same lot/batch number/manufacture date. A little trick I learned in the military they are stamped on the side and also get a couple of bottles more than the manual calls for..you can take back the extra bottles as long as they are not opened.

Actually speaking of that does anybody know how much the 2000 Durango holds for ATF? I'm sure it says in the manual but i'm sure somebody on here knows it off the top of their head. Thanks.
