Default New Magnaflow cat back, a little louder than I thought. New muffler suggestion needed

I just put A magnaflow Y pipe/Converter and cat back on my 03 R/T.

I can feel more power and responsiveness, but it is louder than expected. Full throttle sounds awesome and isn't all that loud, but idle and mild accelerating is rather annoying, as well as a droning above 70mph.

The system is 3" with a straight through muffler so I can see why it's loud, but I've use Magnaflow cat backs before and they are always on the borderline of too quiet, so I am surprised this time.

I tried cutting off the tailpipe and putting this on as a resonator:

But it didn't seem to do anything to the sound.

This is a daily driver and my teenage Daughter will be driving it soon, so it has to be quieter.

I am trying find a quieter muffler, but the pipes are 3" center in and out so almost everything I find is straight through so I don't see much difference there.

I am considering a Flowmaster 50 or 70 series, supposedly the quietest they make.

OR a Dynomax VT http://www.dynomax.com/mufflers.php?muffler=vt

Any input?

I thought that dynomax vt is a cool idea, but have never heard one in person. I personally put the biggest glasspack cherry bomb makes and that is fairly quiet, but I put a 3in on my stock 2 1/2in so it kinda acts like a resonator and muffler.

Put a replacement factory stocker on there if you want it quiet(er).

Your young daughter driver doesn't need the added HP or throttle response anyway.

Well I understand, but the stock muffler is 2.5" center in offset out. My current pipes are 3" center in/out. I would like to just change the muffler, not the whole system.

I ordered a Dynomax VT muffler. I'll report in when it's on.

Well the Magnaflow is one of the best out there and it was a great choice.

Being you bought the 22" muffler I think the largest is 24" so that would be the quietest. As for the most quiet I don't know. I'm running a 24" MagnaFlow right now and I didn't think it was that loud in my truck and I had a 22" in my druango and liked the sound, not too loud and a good sounding grunt.

I think the pipe size has a lot to do with it. A 2.5" straight through system is a lot quieter than a 3" system. I had a corsa touring system on a Tahoe 5.3L which was 2.5" and it was like a stock system. Later I had a Denali with the 6.0L and got a Corsa touring which was 3" and it was quite a bit louder(but nice).

None of the name brand 3"s could hush my system, i ended up with a huge muff , thick walled pipe, single out.

LMFAO!

I think he fixed that a while ago because he didn't want to be one of those people with sugar in their gas tank.......

My truck has a dual 2 1/2 intake and a single center 3 1/2 out......
Really it isn't that bad, but I still gotta gut my air pump.
