check your front doors for tweeters basically inside of where the side mirrors mount, the infinity system with an amp also had speakers up there (and i believe the standard system did not)

I just put an aftermarket radio in my 2001 Durango. I bought the radio, speakers and subwoofer from www.crutchfield.com. A little more expensive than a bargain store but you get for free the wiring harness for radio and speakers, wiring for the sub and adapters so the speakers fit the Durango doors. You also get a sleeve that fits in the hole the old radio came out of, the new radio slides and locks into this sleeve. You can put the wiring harness together on your kitchen table, then just plug it into the OEM harness. To me this is worth the money. You also get free tech support from Crutchfield if you run into problems. You call the toll free number and you are speaking with a tech in under 15 seconds. Worth every penny and the system sounds great! Kenwood head and speaker with Sound Ordinance subwoofer. This all comes with instructions, including how to take the dash apart and the front and rear doors. Can't beat it. My Durango has the infinity system, if yours does be sure to order the equipment that is compatible with Infinity. NOTE: there is a purple with yellow stripe wire running to the factory radio. DON'T USE IT. Just tape it off. It is not used in an aftermarket radio. Crutchfield includes a face plate for the radio so it blends seamlessly with the factory dash. No ugly gaps.

The small tweets were installed there or just up from there.

I plan on installing the Kenwood KVT516 with nav and bluetooth in mine. My 95 avenger had a Sony deck in it that was swapped last year for a JVC which is now in my D. Only required one little touch to swap the OEM DECK out and put the JVC in. I've heard Alpine's quality has gone downhill in the last couple of years.
