Default Rear A/C Bypass

Last fall I took my D into the local shop to get the A/C fixed. Got an estimate of $1,500 The shop said parts were not going to be much - mostly labor costs since the issue was with the Rear A/C and was difficult to get at so it drives up cost.

Needless to say - that didn't happen.

However, with this years summer temps spilling into the 100's, I am thinking I need to fix it. I know I have a line leak passenger side, where the lines go over the frame and possibly just under the exhaust heat shield. Which means a lot of cr*p has to come out of the way. If I did this route, I would be replacing the exhaust system as well simply because its a target of opportunity.

But a thought occurred to me. What the heck. Why not just replace the liquid / Suction lines from expansion valve forward using front only A/C lines. The low pressure sensor (on rear line) would not be an issue since it would be connected to the new line. Even if I also replaced the drier, what, talking maybe a one or 2 hour job with say 150 in parts? Am I wrong?

Refrigerant lines seem hard to locate though. Rockauto doesn't carry. Orielly's, Auto zone neither... Any suggestions on this approach and a line source?

Thx

Spend a saturday at a pick and pull yard getting the parts from a donor...

Not sure which lines you're replacing, but if any of them connect directly to the compressor I don't think it'll work. My understanding is the compressor from a single air vs. dual air has different diameter lines coming from it. I don't know what else would be different....

Good point. I know the suction line connects directly to the compressor as well as branches back off to the rear (where the low pressure switch is connected). I think the liquid line goes directly from the expansion valve on back. Regardless, I will have to either disconnect the lines to see (inspect) which is the problem one, or partially charge the system (possibly with dye loaded RC134a) to identify the bad boy.

Problem is I take a trip this weekend with SWMBO. And a non-working A/C is not an option. Time is killing me and if the front a/c lines are different - that's a no go.

It never ceases to amaze me, how many time I come across stupid implementations that make no sense. If I ever found a genie in a lamp, rest assured, my first wish would be that engineers would first have to serve time as a mechanic!

Yeah, only if every engineer thought the way you (and I) do about this stuff. Just started my pre-engineering program this week, although I'm going for chemical.

I would agree on getting the lines form a doner.
