Default Cant make towing lights work right

I have been trying to make the lights work right for my trailer, but there is a problem on the vehicle somewhere.

The lights work right on the trailer as long as the running lights are turned out on the vehicle, but if you turn them on the lights stop working on the trailr. I know it isnt the trailer becuase the problem still occurs when not hooked to the trailer. I replaced the wiring harness in the tailight and that did not fix the problem. Thee lights all work right on the vehicle, and seem to work fine on the trailer with the running lights off. Im not sure what is wrong, any ideas?
Thanks

Replace the connector on the trailer first. I had a trailer hooked up to my D and it turned my brake lights on regardless if the brake pedal was pressed but the brake lights on the trailer weren't on, WTF? Looked in the connector on the trailer couldn't see any shorts, took it apart an re-connected everything and it still turned on my freaking brake lights! Replaced the connector on the trailer and lived happily ever after.

Is the trailer plug OEM or did you do the work?

It is not OEM, there was an existing harness, so we spliced a 4 way flat into it... So when I realized trhe problem I replaced the entire harness and 4 way flat with a new one. It isnt anything to do with the trailer because the 4 way harness has the test lights on it,and it does it even when the trailer isnt connected.
If i were to replace the headlight switch were might that be? right behind the piece you pull to turn them on?
My guess is there is a short somewere to. seems weird it only has the problem when i pull the switch to turn th lights on.

The piece you turn is the switch.

Was the 4 wire harness tucked up on the drivers side by the pair tire and frame area? And you just put the 4 wire onto those 4 wires, or did you do something else?

From the sound of it you put this in and after there is now a problem......hmmmmmm.......Could just be a bad ground.

The original harness that was in there was sketchy looking,I had the problem with the original harness that was in there,so then I replaced the harness ,with one that was made to plug into tailights that comes with a 4 way flat.It wasnt from anything I did the problm was already there.

That's the problem.

Because of the CTM you can't just tie into the rear lighting. You have to install a special box that the lighting plugs into and it brakes it down to regular towing lights.

You see, Dodge likes to use positive power in negative lines when they are not in use and that is returning back to the CTM most likely. Go to the dealer and get a new harness that plugs in to the OEM one and redo the wiring job. Or you can get that box but I don't know what they call it.
