I have a question about brake lines
Two weeks ago, when I was leaving the grocery store, my brakes went almost to the floor before I felt any braking. I crippled my Durango home and used my transmission to do a lot of my slowing down. When I got home I found one of my metal brake lines had broken. All of the front lines were really rusted so I called my local tire shop that also does automotive repair and they said they could fix it. I took the vehicle to them and they said they would have to replace all of the brake lines in the front which I totally expected. I also asked them to replace my brake calipers while they were at it because I noticed the rubber was split on one of them and didn't want any trouble in the future.
They had the vehicle Friday through Wednesday morning when I went to pick it up. One of the guys told me that they did something, don't know what, but condensed it down from four lines to three and that it was all fixed. It cost me $512.00.
Today, my adult son was here and I told him about it and he wanted to see what they had done to it. He lifted the hood and said to take it back because they mounted the brake line over the engine on the firewall where it gets really hot. My son said that the brake fluid would get hot there and possibly interfere with the brake function and could possibly be a fire hazard. He also said that they did not buy the pre bent lines and appeared to have hand bent the line and that it was shoddy work.
Does any one have an opinion on this and should I take it back and ask them to redo the line?

Any time a shop decides to "condense 4 factory brake lines down to 3" you are in the WRONG place.
Uhhh, yea have them fix it. And have them do it right this time. Seriously?!?

Unfortunatly this is another toxic mechanic/shop thing. It stinks when I read about someone getting burned like this but it's VERY common.Indy,Hydra and shrp are right on,and your "adult son" is up there with them (keep him looking if he picks up like this) I bet they didn't even use a tubing bender and thumb bent the lines..and NEVER go up with them, they're always routed down.Just for the record, even the coated lines for a 60" with fittings costed me under $6. Even with calipers where did they come up with $512?
That is pretty much what I thought.
The receipt brakes down as follows, 2 front brake calipers @ 72.95 each = 145.90 Metal Brake Line 32.95 Rubber Metal Clamp 2.95 Rubber Metal Clamp 3.95 Screw 6.95 Install Front Brake Caliper and Front Metal Brake Lines 300.00 Shop Supplies 6.00 NC Sales Tax 13.49 Total 512.19
I took some pictures and will post them.
